A quick guide about a professional Interior Designer and why you need one for your space?

People often get confused with Interior Designers and Interior Decorators. And yet some with Architects and Interior Designers.

Interior decorators essentially deal with the interior decor of a space. So the materials they would be using are curtains, bedsheets, sofa covers, cushions, vases, candles, decor pieces, sculptures, wallpapers and paintings, rugs and plants etc.

The Architects are the professionals who design a residential or commercial building. There are also Architects who specialise in Interior Design and are called Interior Architects.

Interior Designers are the professionals who design the interiors of a space – residential, commercial, religious spaces so that it is habitable.

The Interior Designers need to have sound knowledge of all carpentry works, electrical, plumbing, flooring, false ceiling, painting works.

They should have good knowledge of all the materials used for interior works from all these departments, the preferred brands, their proper application, properties, best places to be used in, price, availability etc. They also need to know the materials that are regular, advanced and trending.

Each material has it’s own mood and expression and the Interior Designer needs to have the artistic ability to distinguish the materials and use accordingly as per the concept of the design. Though the Interior Designer does not directly execute the project but should have a clear and deep knowledge of the right processes of various interior works.

The Interior Designer creates digital 2D & 3D designs keeping in mind all the details of the work from one to each department and gives the approved working drawings to respective departments for execution work.

It gives an extra edge to the Interior Designer who has the ability to enhance a space manifold without disturbing the functionality of it. Also, a good solution provider to space constraints gives effective management of space compliments. And hence, the professional Interior Designer is an artist of space  who has formally taken education to understand the technicalities of interior designing and all about the different kinds of work involved in doing the interiors.

The Interior Designer creates not only the drawings but chalks out the entire concept of the project keeping in mind the needs, preferences – likes and dislikes of the client, budget, materials, latest products and systems, colours and textures, quality, time and plans the entire project around it. Cost estimate, BOQs  are important documents that the Interior Designer prepares. Some Interior Designers / Offices offer Project Management services also.

What is the scope of work of a Interior Designer? This professional works with residential, commercial designs, materials and layout for furniture, electrical, plumbing, flooring, painting, partitions, roofing, air conditioning, security systems, latest electronic, AI, solar products and systems.

The Interior Designer knows what best can be included while doing the interiors within a budget or what budget is needed to make the best interiors of your choice.

As per the approved design the Interior Designer will suggest the appropriate materials, suggest a range of finishing materials, their cost, brands, it’s availability and quantity required. You would also be informed of the total duration of the projects, any permissions or sanctions needed, instructions to be given before commencement of execution work. Also, any risk management process that will be needed which depends on the project type.

Few Interior Designers / offices  also give Project Management services. This includes scheduled on-site visits  and also need based visits to ensure handover with the decided quality and on time completion with minimum wastage.
